It is important to note that the Qur'an is not any of the things that you use to define it. It is certainly not a collection of Mohammed's prayers, which are entirely derived from the Hadith and the Sirat An-Nabi (Biography of the Prophet). The Hadith were stories of Mohammed's life that were compiled a few generations later by the eminent scholars of the day and depending on which scholar you choose (Abu Hanifa, Hanbali, etc.) the collection of Hadith is different. These Hadith are used exigetically in a manner similar to the Qur'an. Sirat An-Nabi was compiled by Ibn Is-haq and is a story of Mohammed's entire life. Secondly, Islam is not Mohammed's teaching, but God's teaching, so the Qur'an would never be accepted as the former.

However, when a number of Muslim scholars died in the battle of Yamama, there was a fear that the Qur'an might disappear if there were no formal written format. Therefore. Omar, the third Rightly-Guided Caliph ordered the various Hifadh (people who had committed the entire Qur'an to memory) to sit together and hash out an official version of the Qur'an. This took place within 30 years of Muhammad's death.
