New York was the first state to have a black president, many years before it even became legal. In 1904, Winston Charles, an African American, ran for president, and only New York put him on the ballot. He actually won the election in that state, making New York 104 years ahead of its time. The federal government found out about this and responded by putting our first black president in jail for 20-30 years. He was killed in a prison riot 3 years later.
There is no president of New York. City governments are headed by mayors, and state governments are headed by governors. So there is a Mayor of New York City and a Governor of New York State.
The state of New York has had the largest number of former governors become president. There were four of them including Martin Van Buren, Grover Cleveland, Theodore Roosevelt, and Franklin Roosevelt.

Both are correct; the "state" in New York State, like the "city" in New York City, are only included in the name so people don't get confused about which one you're referring to. Both have the same name, so the words "state" and "city" are added to distinguish between them, just like Washington State and Washington, D.C. People often don't use the "state" and "city" when it's obvious which one you're referring to, for example, "the mayor of New York" or "the governor of New York." Only cities have mayors, and only states have governors, so in those cases, you don't need to say, "New York City" and "New York State."
Governors of New York who became US Vice President are George Clinton, Daniel D. Tompkins, Martin van Buren, Levi P. Morton, Theodore Roosevelt and Nelson A. Rockefeller.
President Van Buren's home state was New York. He was born in Kinderhook, New York.
Both Theodore and Franklin Roosevelt were born in the state of New York. Teddy was born in 1858 and Franklin was born in 1882.
