A Spanish Explorer, named Hernando Cortes set foot in the Aztec empire in 1519. His expedition was to set across the land to find gold and bring the treasures to Spain. He conquered surrounding civilizations such as theTectonacs and Tlaxcalans. This may of been why he was able to defeat the Aztecs, as they were a very powerful empire. He also ruled parts of Mexico .

Hernando Cortes

Hernando Cortes was the Spanish conquistador who brought about the downfall of the Aztec Empire (modern day central Mexico). In 1519 Cortes left Hispanola (modern Cuba) and landed on the east coast of Modern Mexico. Over the course of the next two years, and through a series of alliances to indigenous groups opposed to the Aztecs, guile and cunning, Cortes conquered and subjugated the Aztec Empire.

Hernando Cortes defeated the Aztec empire. The emporer at that time, Moctezuma, welcomed Hernando and his crew when they first came to the Aztec's land. Apperantly, Moctezuma thought that Hernando was Quetzacoatl, an Aztec god. He gave Cortes gifts and treasures. Instead of accepting them, Cortes and his crew attacked the empire during a festival. They ended up retreating from the Aztecs, but Moctezuma was killed in the fight. The Spaniards brought small pox, a disease carried by the Europeans, to the empire. That disease killed thousands of inhabitants. In May 1521, Cortes returned to attack the weakened people, claimed victory, and left the cities in ruins.

There is a common misconception that Hernan Cortes (1485-1547) and a couple hundred conquistadors annihilated the Aztecs with superior weaponry and a false belief that he was mistaken for the god Quetzalcoatl; the truth is the Aztecs knew he was a man, but he made an alliance with the Tlaxcalan nation, who were bitter enemies of the Aztecs and provided more than 100,000 warriors to help Cortes during his conquest. Also, when contact was made, inadvertently someone from Cortes' crew started an epidemic of smallpox that utterly ravaged the Aztec homeland; it is stated that from a population of 20 million in 1518, after 1521 there were only 2 million people living in Mexico. After such event, the Spanish found relatively easy to mow down the remaining Aztec forces.
