Hi,
Flourine is the element. When combined with hydrogen to form hydrogen fluoride, and the dissolved in water to form hydrofluoric acid.
As hydofluoric acid, it will etch glass.
Hydofluoric acid has a single hydrogen atom and one fluorine atom, physicaly its like hydrochloric acid, a clear liquid.
The formula for hydroflouric acid is HF.
Search Wiki for "hydrofluoric acid" to get more detail.
Hope this helps,
Mike
Nitric acid is the most effective, but can be dangerous to handle. Muriatic acid, which is sold to etch concrete, and sulphuric acid are also effective, as are a variety of chemical blends and slurries, called mordants, depending on exactly what kind of etching you are doing.
There is no safe formula for etching glass because all chemical etching solutions for glass contain floride compounds which are extremely hazardous when absorbed through the skin or eyes, or inhaled or ingested, even the ones found in craft stores. If you are uncertain about how to use these compounds safely, you should consider sand blasting your design instead. Small, economical pen sized blasters are available that require little air.
Hydrofluoric acid is traditionally been used to etch glass. Now an acidic salt (Ammonium bifluoride) is also used as believed to be safer. However, both substances are extremely toxic and corrosive and should only be used by those who have been trained how to handle them safely.
Glass etching is made with H2SiF6 or a HF solution.

An etchant is an acid that is used in etching. The chemical composition varies with the item to be etched but all are acid based.
Hydrofluoric acid desolves glass because of its high reactivity towrds the glass. Because of this reason, it is usually stored in plastic containers.

Glass etching pastes or cremes contain fluoride. The most common are sodium fluoride and hydrogen fluoride. This does not 'etch' the glass, it causes fluoridation which looks like etching.
One can order etching glass online on the official Martha Stewart, Hobby Lobby, and Michaels website. One can also order etching glass from either Amazon or eBay.
It is a physical change caused by chemicals. Chemical changes are phyiscal changes.

Hexafluorosilicic acid. Though it is safer to use glass etching cream, which is used by hobbyists, as it is generally easier to use than acid. The cream is available from art supply shops.
