Thunder and lightning both occur at the same instant. If you are observing them from a distance, then you perceive the lightning first, because the light travels to you much faster than the sound does.
Lightning. Its ionization of air is what makes the boom.

A thunderstorm must have at least begun in order to produce lightning , so the storm comes first. The lightningis an electrical charge produced by the movement of charged or "ionized" particles between ground and upper air layers and clouds. During a thunderstorm, when the electrical charge becomes great enough, it breaks through the air between clouds and ground, and flashes the stored energy as a lightning strike, dissipating some of the electrical charge. In nature, a tornado can produce many lightning strikes, however, tornados always seem to be a product of some sort of thunderstorm activity. Additionally, large volcanic explosions have been known to produce lightning There are other ways to produce lightning, such as a nuclear explosion, which can produce numerious lightningstrikes. A heliocopter produces similar charges when docking to a boat, causing miniature lightning strikes to the boat, due to the charge built up by the rotor blades moving through the air.

Probably rain.

Thunder and lightning both occur at the same instant. If you are observing them

from a distance, then you perceive the lightning first, because the light travels to

you much faster than the sound does. If you are not observing them from a

distance, then frankly, you won't care.

MORE SPECIFICALLY

Lightning and thunder are both the same thing. Lighting is the thing we see of the static electricity of the hot and warm air meeting near the clouds. It is unknown which came first, since in the primordial earth there were chances of lightning or rain, but lightning is more frequent with water.

Lightning because speed of light = Miles per second: 186000

Miles per hour: 671000000

Metres per second: 299792458

Kilometres per hour: 1080000000

speed of sound = 343 m / s

Thunder and lightning both occur simultaneously. You will see the lighting before you hear the thunder if you are far away from it because light travels faster than sound.

What are the similarities of thunder and lightning?

No, the two are quite different. The main difference is lightning is light, thunder is sound. Lightning is an electric charge that can come from a cloud for various reasons. Thunder is the sound made by lightning. Since sound travels slower than light, lightning comes first, thunder second.

Why does thunder comes after lightning?

Lightning does not come after thunder. Thunder is the sound produced from lightning. The amount of time in between when you see the lightning and when you hear the thunder makes you think that the thunder comes first but it is in fact the other way around.

Is it true that if there is lightning and thunder mushrooms come out?

Sort of. Mushrooms need a bit of moisture, and thunder is often followed by rain. So it's not really the thunder & lightning that brings the mushrooms out, but the accompanying rain that does it.Only rain would work just as well, but not be quite as noticeable.Lightning and thunder cannot cause mushrooms to grow, but they are usually accompanied by rain, and fungi (a mushroom is part of a fungus) grow best in moist environments.

Can you have lightning without thunder?

Never. Thunder and lightning always come together. But you'd never know it. You always see the lightning before you hear the thunder. That's because light travels super fast, at 186,000 miles (300,000km) a second! Sound is much slower, at only about 1/5 mile (0.3km) a second. So first you see lightning, then you hear the thunder. Thunder is a result of Lightning. When hot air hits cold air it creates friction and that friction creates lightning. There is more to it than that, this is the quick version. Since light is the fastest speed you will hear the sound of thunder much later because sound is slower than light. Popular thinking will tell you that the time between lightning and thunder is the distance you are from the action. 1 second = 1 mile.

How do clouds create lightning and thunder?

Differential electrical charges within the clouds or between the clouds and the ground cause the lightning. Thunder is caused by the rapid expansion of the air that the lightning passes through, the air expands because it is heated by the lightning to many thousands of degrees very quickly. Thunder is the sound of lightning hitting the ground, and lightning is just the electric attraction between the cloud and the ground Actually, thunder is the release of energy and lightning occurs when opposite charges build up in thunderstorm cloud. As a result around 58 are killed and more than 300 are injured due to lightning strikes. It's when the clouds gather up the energy from the Sun (thats why the Sun soon hides away) and it builds up electricity and they release the energy which is lightning. Clouds don't create thunder, Lightning does because thunder is that sound when lightning occurs.

Is thunder heard before the flash of lightning?

not if you are standing far enough away and not at all the sound of the lightning is thunder but if you were standing directly underneath it the sound would come at the exact moment of the light

How come you see lighting and do not hear it and how come you hear thunder and do not see it?

You see lightning before you hear it because light moves faster than sound. Thunder comes from the lightning. You can't hear it until the sound waves reach you.

Why is lighting before thunder?

The reason is because the speed of sound is slower than the speed of light. Thats why when lightning looks like a pure lightning strike that is not far away from your shelter, the thunder happens almost at the same time. If lightning was just a flash in the sky, the thunder takes longer to come up.

What does Selena Gomez mean when she says you are the thunder and im the lightning in her new song Naturally?

Them lyrics are from the song Naturally, and they mean: Thunder and Lightning nearly always come together and when you think thunder you think lightning. Selena mean's in Naturally that she's found that special person who belongs with her, like thunder belongs with lightning. It's hard to describe. Lightning comes with thunder so Selena means they are never one with out the other. She's found the thunder to her lightning = she founds the person that belongs with her. III THIINK.

Can lightning come without thunder?

Lightning is the electrical discharge which neutralises the static electricity built up within the cloud or between cloud and earth. The very hot plasma bolt which transmits the electrical current super heats water molecules which expand with such speed that they produce the sound of thunder. The only way I can think that this is not the case is if the air is very dry indeed. Almost without exception, the two will always occur together.

Where did the idea of Ben Franklin's lightning bolt come from?

thunder clouds

How are thunder and lightning different and where do they come from?

Thunder is the sound of lightning. It makes the BOOM sound. Lightning is the yellow squiggly line you see from the clouds. I don't really know how lightning became to be or where it actually comes from but somewhere inside the clouds i guess.

What time does lightning and thunder happen?
