Which countries are communist at present?

The following is a list of countries that are currently one-party communist states. This means that the government and the party are intertwined. There are some countries that have multi-party democratic elections where a communist party candidate has run and won, but such a country wouldn't qualify as fully communist because it has multiple parties and the government itself is independent of the parties.

As of 2007, there are five one-party communist nations:

People's Republic of China
Republic of Cuba
Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea)
Lao People's Democratic Republic (Laos)
Socialist Republic of Vietnam
