On the Australian flag you have the union jack on the left corner , and you have four white stars ,to mark the four corners, of a wast and almost empty Australia.
The first flag of the US had 13 stripes, alternating red and white like it still previously does. But instead of stars the Union Jack was in the upper right corner, symbolising the relationship between the US and Britain. The first OFFICIAL flag of the US had 13 stripes, alternating red and white too, and had 13 stars where the Union Jack was previously found, but there the stars formed a circle. After this flag was made each time a new state was admitted to the Union a star and a stripe were added, but once 15 states were admitted, they only added stars each time a new state joined. The previous American flag has 50 stars lined up in alternation rows of 6 and 5 in the upper right corner, and has the original 13 stripes to symbolise the 13 colonies the country grew from.

The current US flag was designed shortly after the American Revolution. The red and white stripes, of which there are 13, represent the original 13 colonies. The white stars on a blue background represent the states. The original design was a circle of stars but as states joined the Union this was modified to rows of stars. The current flag has, thus, 50 stars, one for each state.
The "union" is also known as the "canton" in flag terms. When looking at the flag, it is the upper left corner of the flag, the position of honor. This is also the "flag's right" corner from the flag's perspective looking at you, the viewer. The term "union" comes from the Second Continental Congress resolution on June 14th 1777 that defined the first flag of the United States of America: "Resolved, That the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation."
A blue field with 12 five-pointed gold stars arranged in a circle in the center; blue represents the sky of the Western world, the stars are the peoples of Europe in a circle, a symbol of unity; the number of stars is fixed.
