The Justinian code was actually called Corpus Juris Civilis (Body of Civil Law). It codified Roman civil law. Roman civil law has provided the foundation of the civil many modern countries. It has done so by providing important principles of law. The actual laws of the time of Justinian I are not used as they applied to an ancient and very different world.

The law of the US is based on common law, not civil law.

What did emperor Justinian want to do?

Justinian I wanted to 'restore' the Roman Empire by reconquering the lands lost by the western part of the Roman Empire as a result of the Germanic invasions. Justinian's army defeated the Vandals in Africa (Vandalic War, 533-534) retaking the area of the Vandalic kingdom (northern Tunisia and eastern Algeria). The Moors of southern Tunisia and western Libya rebelled and were defeated later, in 548. Justinian wanted to restore Africa as it had been under the Romans. The religion of the Vandals, Arian Christianity, was persecuted. Many Vandals fled Africa and some went west, to Algeria, and integrated with the local Berbers. The remaining Vandals were shipped to the east and enlisted in the imperial army. The Vandal ethnic group disappeared. Justinian managed to retake the Spanish areas along the southern coast. Justinian I attacked the Ostrogoths in Italy, starting the Gothic War (535-54) which he won. However, this was a highly costly victory. Nineteen years of fierce fighting left some areas of northern Italy devastated and depopulated. The war depleted the resources of the empire. This and the impoverishment of Italy made it impossible for the Byzantines to oppose the invasion of northern Italy by the Lombards fifteen year later (569-72). The Lombards also took over areas of central and southern Italy. The remaining Byzantine possessions in Italy were in part of central Italy and in Apulia, Sicily, Sardinia and Corsica. Justinian I also wanted to protected and consolidate the official church of the empire (the orthodox Church). He persecuted dissident Christian sects and paganism. He secured the rights of the church and the clergy and protected and expanded the monastic orders. He granted the monks the right to inherit property from private individuals and to receive annual gifts for the state and banned the confiscation of monastic property. He gave the canons of the church legal force and issued laws regarding the administration of church property, the elections, rights and obligations of the clergy, the conduct of service and episcopal jurisdiction. Justinian I was one of the most important emperors in the history of the Orthodox Church. He was described as a 'nursing father' of the church. He put it on a more solid footing, and redefined its structure.

Did senator Kerry compare irag to Vietnam?

Nearly ALL politicians, movie stars, and the common person relate ANY current conflict with Vietnam, because that was America's last major war. Operation Urgent Fury in 1983 (Grenada) was compared to Vietnam; so was Operation Just Cause in 1989 (Panama); as was Operation Desert Storm in 1991 (Iraq), etc. etc. They certainly cannot be compared with a TOTAL war which was "declared" and used atomic weapons...such as WWII.

How does the number of cells affect the current in a circuit?

More cells = more available power. Power = voltage * current. The orientation of the cells determines whether this power is delivered as more voltage, or more current. If the cells are in series, the voltage will increase proportionately and the available current will remain unchanged; if the cells are in parallel, the current will increase proportionately and the voltage will remain unchanged.

If resistance goes up does current go down?

At constant temp.& pressure,on the same circuit, with potential difference unchanged, current reduces if resistance increases.(Ohm's law).

What is the difference between voltage and current. Explain practically?

Voltage can be compared with the level to which the tap is opened. (Volume of water) Current can be compared with the speed at which water flows from tap. (Flow of water).

Why is the base current in a transistor so much less than the collector current?

as the base current is very small compared to the emitter current, the collector current is nearly equal to the emitter current..

What happens to the current of R1 connected in series with R2 when it is also connected in parallel with R3?

The current, if connected to a voltage source that can supply the needed current to (R1+R2) R3, will be unchanged. If the source cannot supply the needed current, the terminal voltage will decrease, which will change the current flowing through R1 and R2.

What would happen to the voltage when the resistors are ten time larger than have be given?

If all the resistors in a circuit are changed by the same amount, including internal resistances of voltage and current sources, the voltages throughout the circuit remain unchanged. The currents will change though. If the internal resistances of voltage and current sources remain unchanged it is more complicated and will have to be computed on a case by case basis.
