The way it could be considered a closed

System is through matter. Since matter doesn't get a lot of energy from space, just the biosphere. Elements passfrom one organism to the next through closed loops called biogeochemical cycles.

For everything except energy, it's closed. For energy EX. the sun it's open.

There is a law, called the Conservation of Mass which basically states that if you're in a closed system (the earth is mostly a closed system other than asteroids and what not) then the amount of matter will remain constant. The earth is a closed system, because matter doesn't leave the atmosphere, or enter in through the atmosphere.

It is often said that Earth is a closed system with regard to matter, and an open system with regard to energy. This is generally true, since the fraction of matter added (meteorites) or removed (spacecraft) is negligibly small at present. Early in the formation of the solar system, matter was collected (accreted) at a much larger rate, but this preceded the establishment of living organisms.

The biosphere of the Earth can be considered a closed system of matter because other than sunlight, the carbon cycle of living organisms is completely contained on the planet, with virtually no additions or removals.

The answer is that the earth already has everything. It doesn't need to get anything from space besides heat from the sun.

In terms of energy what kind of system is earth?

With respect to matter, Earth is a closed system and with respect to energy, Earth is an open system.

Why is the earth a closed system with respect to chemicals but open with respect to energy?

That means that chemicals don't leave Earth, or come to Earth, in significant quantities - whereas energy does.

Why do scientist consider earth an essentially closed system?

Because no significant amount of matter enters and leaves Earth. Note, however, that with respect to energy, Earth is NOT a closed system. We can't live without the energy (radiation) from the Sun - and the corresponding cooling-off radiation into space.

What is Earth in an open system with respect to?

Mainly with respect to energy.

Explain why the Earth is essentially a closed system in terms of matter and if it also a?

Earth is essentially a closed system in terms of matter because it does not let matter come in or not.

What is an example of conservation of mass in a closed system?

the earth

Why is earth consider a closed system?

Because you were born.

Do earth worms have a closed circulatory system?

yes

Is earth an open or closed system in terms of matter?

It's both closed and open systems.

What is earth considered a closed system?

A system that never be self-contained regardless of matter.

Is early earth an open or closed system?

Early Earth was an open system because energy and matter such as light energy and meteors were bombarding the Earth.

Why earth is a closed system?

Earth is an open system. If you only consider matter, no significant amount of matter comes to Earth or leaves it, so it may be considered closed for all practical purposes. However, there is also the all-important energy; a large amount of energy reaches Earth from the Sun, and is later radiated back into space.
