LED is a thinner/slick modern looking tv. It uses LED lights or light emitting diodes. LED TV's are able to produce a higher picture quality then the stander LCD TV. This is because of higher contrast ratios. LED TV's can show truer blacks and brighter whites.

There are currently two technologies that are referred to as LED.

LCD televisions that use LED light sources are often known as LED televisions. The technology is still based on LCD but the light source is somewhat more efficient than the conventional fluorescent sources.

There is an emerging technology within the domestic market which uses red, green and blue LEDs in each pixel to generate the image without needing any additional light source. There are challenges in using LEDs in this way but as development continues, it is likely to become far more common over the next year or two. The technology has been used for many years in large arena screens. Domestic televisions have made use of smaller dimension LED technology but the principles are similar in both.

LED televisions have the potential to be smaller and simpler than other technologies and many of the issues of LCD and plasma are not present in LED technology.

There is confusion about LED televisions.

LCD televisions require a light source behind the LCD panel. The liquid crystals act as shutters to let light pass and so they create the image. Conventional LCD television use cold cathode fluorescent lighting behind the LCD layer. More recently, LEDs are being used as the light source and they are cooler and more efficient than the CCFL models. However, the LCD technology hasn't changed but these are frequently known as LED televisions.

The latest technology to make it to the domestic market is a true LED television, normally being advertised as OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode). Instead of backlighting and LCD shutters, a red, green and blue LED are used for every pixel on the screen. Each is illuminated as it's needed to create the image. One of the significant advantages is that the screens can be much thinner than other technologies and the power used is lower than LCD televisions. Some models are as thin as 6mm (1/4"). The OLED models are expected to make an impact during 2013 and are likely to replace LCD as the most common display technology in the next few years.

LED televisions are not common at the time of writing (2010) but they are expected to make a bigger impact in the future. Although it is a new application, the technology already has quite a history. It is the same type of technology that is used in large outdoor television screen used in concerts and for advertising which have been used for well over a decade.

There is some confusion about "LED" televisions. The term often refers to an LED backlight in an LCD TV. It is an alternative to the conventional "florescent" tube backlighting.

The latest technology gaining popularity is a true LED television. There is no LCD shutter system and the picture is created with a red, a green and a blue LED for each pixel. LED technology has been used for many years on large open air and arena screens but is only now being produced for domestic sizes. In 2010 there is still some way to go before it reaches the same market penetration as LCD television. We can expect LED televisions to become a popular choice in the coming years with a lot of potential for power saving compared to LCD.

Both have advantages and disadvantages but many believe that because the led screen actually emits light (rather than just reflecting it as the LCD does) they give a clearer sharper image. However they are significantly more expensive

Although it still depends on its technical specification, in the vast majority of cases an LED TV will be better. LED usually has a sharper image as each pixel is being changed individually by a different diode meaning that the picture also changes quicker and smoother.

LCD TV is also known as Liquid Crystal Display TV. From its name, it uses liquid crystal to produce images on the TV screen. Its thin layer of liquid crystal has tiny cells that produce pixels. As an electric current is applied, its rod shaped molecules respond by bending the light. LCD TVs are quite inefficient in terms of power utilization because the enormous mass of light that is being produced behind the screen is blocked before it reaches the person who is watching the television.

LED TVs also known as Light Emitting Diode on the other hand use backlighting technology with the use of LED. Its screen contains blue, red and green LEDs which lights up to produce the correct color. It has two types of backlighting technology: Edge Lighting and Full Array. Its backlighting technology makes it possible to consume 40% less power making it eco friendly.
