However, I have played $400-$600 Epiphone archtops (Dots, Rivieras and Casinos, which are Epiphone interpretations of Gibson's ES-330 and ES-335 designs) that feel and look better than $1000 Gibson ES-333s. I have never played an Epiphone Les Paul, SG, Firebird, Flying V or Explorer that can surpass a Gibson, though, which leads me to believe that Epiphone does a better job on its archtop semi-hollow electric Guitars than on "budget versions" of Gibson's solidbody designs.

And for the record, Epiphone was not always a budget-priced subsidiary of Gibson. The two companies were rivals until Gibson bought out Epiphone in 1957. Epiphone did have unique, non-Gibson-affiliated designs of its own, such as the Emperor and the Broadway. Vintage, pre-Gibson-takeover Epiphones can command prices and have build quality comparable to Gibsons of the same age.

Gibson has two makers of guitars: Gibson USA, and Gibson Custom. Epiphone, in fact, is also a maker of Gibson guitars. Going on their site, you may notice that they sell Les Pauls and SG's (for example) for Gibson USA, Gibson Custom, and Epiphone. And they are both equal in quality as far as playability, but for looks it just depends on what you're in to.

Epiphone guitars are good guitars. There are, however, some differences to consider. Gibsons are made in the USA, while the Epiphone is made in Korea, China, or Japan. Labor is cheaper overseas, so it saves costs. The electronics are also made overseas. They are, however, made to the same specs as their American cousins. The finish is a completely different process for both. Up close, the Epi is beautiful. The Gibsons are even prettier. The wood used on Gibsons is generally Honduran Mahogany, and the bodies are one piece. The Epi uses other varieties of mahogany, and the body is usually a three piece affair. All said and done, the Epiphone is a fine instrument. Some Epiphones I have played sound and play as nice as the $2,000 plus Gibsons I have played. If you are willing to do a set-up and replace some hardware, you can achieve the same sound and playability as a Gibson without the price. The Epiphone will lose value over the years, the Gibson will gain value. Most Gibson owners are aware of this, and see their purchase of a Gibson as an investment. The name means a lot. I have built guitars for two companies, worked at music stores, been in bands, and have played a lot of guitars. I have a very nice late 80's Epiphone Les Paul Custom which, after leveling the frets, and re-setting up plays and sounds every bit as good as most Gibsons. I won't be selling my Epi for $2000 down the road, but then again, I only paid $268 when I bought it used in 1991.

They are almost the same. I have an Epi and my mate has a Gibson and we cant decide which is better. epiphone are much cheaper though. Epiphone are to gibson, what Squire is to Fender, the sister company.

or bologna budget epiphone sg custom @$800.00 and buy some super distortion pickups? or what ever your taste? verses Gibson Custom $3000.00 or much more!

Epiphone have cheaper electrical pup`s and knobs and are nose heavy some well know gibsons nose dive or lift up on hollow bodies ! just get better strap..

Budget is you key to what is best? after all i personally had a ibanez copy of les paul,,

and everyone wanted to play because had more balance and bite and more comfortable then there gibsons and even couple diehard fender lovers wanted this guitar! which is better? that is your choice?

depends on what kind of sound you want, hard rock over drive sound ONLY= go with the SG all around= go with the les paul the SG has better humbuckers though
