At one time, they were considered different species. Currently they are lumped into one species, brown bear (Ursus arctos). The grizzly was Ursus horibilus, now it's a type of brown bear (Ursus arctos horribilus) but of course, if you read older books it will still be split.

Grizzlies tend to avoid you at all cost, don't like the way we smell. Black bears can live with people as is the case now when they're turnin' up in folks backyards in Connecticut and Jersey. With any bear, food should be kept up high and bears should NEVER be fed. Most problems come when people don't realize the danger they pose, especially a sow with cups. When hiking, bring a powerful type of mace/pepper spray and make lots of noise when in the woods in the Fall when bears are fattenin' up for the winter. Research and take to heart bears if you're goin' to the woods. Peace, Rick

Good answer Rick. In addition to that. Bears in the wild tend to avoid humans. When exposed to the food source "human" they tend to lose the natural fear. If you are being attacked by a bear, there is a major difference. Brown/Grizzly bear attacks are mostly defensive while most black bear attacks are predatory. The general recommendation for Grizzly bears is to lie down and play dead, go into a fetal position and try to protect your head. With black bears you need to climb a tree that is big enough that the black bear can't push down but small enough that he can't climb it. The reason for this is that black bears are trying to kill you.

Like Rick said, respect the bear and the safe distance at all times.

Cheers, 99

Grizzly Bears vary from blonde to black in colour. They are most commonly medium to dark brown. The long guard hairs often have a lighter tip, giving the bears their 'grizzled' appearance. Black bears exhibit great variation in colour, ranging from black to light blonde. Cinnamon coloured black bears are quite common in the west. Many black bears have a light patch on the chest. The snout is usually light in colour, even in black bears. == Size is a poor identifier as both bears vary greatly in size. Male grizzlies average 225 kg (500 lbs), with females averaging around 160 kg (350 lbs). Large bears may tip the scales at 360 kg (800 lbs). Black bears average 50-140 kg (110-300 lbs). Large male bears can top 180 kg (400 lbs) and may be larger than female grizzlies, so size is not an accurate indicator. == Grizzly bears stand around 1 m (3.28 ft) at the shoulder and may stand 2 m (6.5 ft). Black bears are slightly smaller at the shoulder, between 0.75 to .9 m (2.5 to 3 ft). When standing erect, they rise around 1.5 m (5 ft). == In profile, the grizzly bear has a distinct shoulder hump. This is due to large muscles necessary for digging roots, tubers and ground squirrels. Black bears lack the shoulder hump of the grizzly. == Grizzly bears have a dished-in profile, with a clear depression between the eyes and the end of the nose. Grizzlies also have short rounded ears. Black bears have a "Roman" profile, with a straight line running between the forehead and the tip of the nose. The ears of black bears are larger and more distinctly pointed. == The claws of a grizzly have a formidable reputation. Very long, between 5-10 cm (2-4 in), they are often clearly visible in the tracks. They may also be visible from a distance. Black bear claws are much shorter than those of grizzly bears, usually around 4 cm (1.5 in). They are less visible from a distance and play a minor role in track records. == Grizzly tracks have a minimal arc in the toes. Simply stated, if you line up a straight edge with the base of the large toe, and then with the front of the foot pad, the other end should run between the middle and base of the small toe. Often the long claws are clearly visible in the track. The toe imprints of grizzly bears are close together, usually touching each other. Black bear tracks have a large toe arc. If you line up a straight edge with the base of the large toe, and then with the front of the foot pad, the other end should run between the middle and tip of the small toe. The shorter claws of the black bear often do not leave a visible impression in the ground. The toe imprints of black bears are farther apart, often with a definite space between the toes.

There have been about the same number of people killed by grizzlies and black bears in the U.S. in the past 100 years. However, There are about 55,000 grizzly bears in the U.S. and Canada. What does the grizzly bear do to the black bear?

Grizzly bears never come into contact with black bears so the question is invalid. -------------- Of course grizzly bears come in contact with black bears. Grizzlies tend to inhabit more open areas, and black bears tends towards forested areas, but their ranges do overlap. Black bears evolved in the presence of grizzly bears due to their ability to climb trees, and their tendency to stay near mature forest trees. Black bears become more vulnerable to grizzly attacks when they venture too far into open grizzly territory, or when grizzlies explore black bear areas looking for food. This could occur after a forest fire creates an explosion of high calorie, ground cover and brush, for example. Grizzly predation on black bears occurred in Yellowstone Park at a number of sites: Hoodoo creek, Dave Adams Hill, Grizzly Overlook, and Pilgrim Creek. They took place from 1990 to 2005, indicating this is normal behaviour. The Grizzly Overlook attack is documented at http://www.nps.gov/yell/naturescience/upload/predation.pdf. There you will also find references to other incidents.

How do people impact grizzly bears?

i dont know the answer to that but i do know why people kill grizzly bears........People kill grizzly bears because they believe them to be highly dangerous and aggressive. Which is true, however only when they are provoked or they feel their young are in danger. If you leave them alone and keep away from their offspring then they will not attack. Therefore, people kill grizzly bears (Brown bears) because they are mislead to believe the worst about them. From: Shilo Kim JohnsonRead more: Why_people_kill_grizzly_bears

Which is the most vicious bear?

The brown or grizzly bear often becomes a confirmed maneater, but black bears seem to attack more often, because there are many more black bears than browns.

Are black Bears vicious?

Yes, they are. They can get quite big too. A study shows there are more aggressive attacks on humans caused by black bears than grizzly bears and polar bears. Most violent attacks by black bears on humans are rather predatory than territorial. Black bears arent easily intimidated as some people think.
