Fixed skimmers are good for small bodies of water that don't have a surge tank. Performance of fixed skimmers will change depending on the height of the water. Overflow gutters don't. But if the body of water is large and you do have a surge tank then overflow would be better.

1 Overflow or wet wall/ deck skimming (This system is generally built in with the pool) is accepted as the preferred method for Swimming Pools and the vast majority of public pools are set up this way as a mater of fact it is mandatory according to most health departments. skimming is the best way to remove pathogens that are harmful to heath quickly from the waters surface put it through filtration and return the water to deeper regions of the pool where disinfection of the water is more effective. However wet wall or overflow skimming requires the use of a balance tank or constant automatic toping up to work properly.

2 The traditional fixed skimmer that is found in most swimming pools (these are made by a variety of manufacturers World wide) is able to keep water up to the filtration system even though water levels move up or down in the pool within certain limits. However they are able to do this at the cost of effective skimming. Too much water, say after rain and it stops working altogether not enough water over it and it starts to suck air (cavitate).

3 Suction-side floating skimmer such as the pulse surface skimmer, This type of skimmer is plugged through a flexible suction hose into the vacuum plate over the leaf basket of a standard swimming pool and adjusted to that pools filtration system, With this method optimum skimming is maintained at all times because the skimmer floats and moves up and down with the water.

The Blue Whale Skimmer is a safe water delivery sub system that provides high flow rates to enter the filter area of residential swimming pools. It is the first 100 gallon per minute surface skimmer introduced into the industry and it is the key element of a swimming pool circulating system. The Blue Whale System uses Blue Whale Skimmers with 2½" side ports to provide a reliable, safe, bountiful source of water acquisition. The ultimate results are both favorable and predictable. Good hydraulics means greater flow at less cost. The key indicator of performance is the kilowatts consumed for each turnover. In addition, the Blue Whale System eliminates the need for a main drain. This eliminates the risk of suction entrapment in all new residential pools. Actual results of the Blue Whale System: · Lowered construction costs · Lowered electric bills · Dramatic increase in flow rate · Reduced turnover rates to 2 to 3 hours · Noticeable reduction of chlorine demand · Lowered horse power required · Quieter motor operation · Longer lasting skimmer baskets · Longer lasting filter elements · Quantifies systems in kilowatts per turnover · Provides an extra water source for other functions

Overflow type pools are very good in that they skimm everything from the surface while the pump is runing these pools either have a wet wall system into a balance tank or the water flows into through into a balance tank. the drawback with these systems is that corect waterlevels have to be carefully maintained for the system to work effectivelyand they are expensive to set up Staic skimmer type pools have more flexibility in the water level, however they rarely work properly but the majority of pools are fitted with them. Suctionside floating skimmers are also now available and seem to have answer to all of the problems that are posed by the other skimmer systems. floating skimers can be used with or without a static skimmer. and is also used for keeping floating debris in balance tanks under controll

Where can you buy a pool skimmer?

The pool's manufacturer. They are not at all standardized across brands, so you need to know what brand your skimmer or pool is, and it helps if you can locate a pool store and bring the old skimmer to them - they may be able to order one, even if they don't have that brand in stock.

Where do you attach the vacuum hose to vacuum the pool?

Attach the hose to the side skimmer basket with a special plastic adaptor that fits in your size skimmer. Types of skimmers: Brands: Purex, Anthony, American Products, Pentair, Hayward are major names. Hum, not inside the skimmer basket but under it. There you will find either a disc type object much like a flying saucer. Then under that there will be 2 holes. The one, if you are looking down into the skimmer from the deck side of the pool, to back side of the skimmer - 0 0 < that one - closest to you is the suction part of the skimmer. Your hose is pushed into this hole after filling the hose with water. The "adapter" is another type skimmer as stated above that you can rotate to the left or right to achieve optimum skimmer suction. With a single hole skimmer - that hole is the suction for the vac. You just have to plug the second skimmer if you have one. Still, there is another with a hole in the side wall of the skimmer near the bottom of the skimmer. This is also the vac hole. With it you plug yoyr vac into it and then close a valve that controls the main drain. You have to remember when you are finished vacing pool you then open the main drain valve. The latter one is a quite old system made by or used by Anthony Pools. k

Where is the water overflow pipe located on an in-ground vinyl pool?

You most likely do not have one on this type of pool. However, one can be added be simply drilling a hole in the back of a plastic skimmer box somewhere near the top and back or side or the unit. You could possibly use garden hoes fittings and gaskets or PVC and silicone at the thru wall hole then go from there to desired location. You'll have to work out the details of sealing the opening.

How do you turn on and use the floor drain to filter and isolate the skimmer filters?

On the pool I take care of, before the pump (suction side) there is a large 3 position valve. To the left is bottom drain, middle is all 3 and to the right is the 2 skimmer baskets. You will have to check to see which one controls which on your pool but is simple to check, turn all the way one way and stick your hand into one of the skimmer baskets and feel for suction.Answ:: Most newer pools have a "valve assy." of sorts at the bottom of the skimmer. It is either made of plastic or brass. This rotates in one direction to either increase or decrease the suction at the skimmer. It really does not totally shut off the main drain.Other type skimmers have a system that uses a "float valve" at the bottom of the skimmer. Removing this unit from the skimmer will reveal two holes at the bottom of the skimmer. Looking down into the skimmer from the deck side of the pool ~ the hole closest to you would be the direct link to the pump. This is the port in which you would connect the vac hose. The other one is connected to the main drain and all go back to the pump from the bottom of the skimmer. The "float's" purpose is to prevent the skimmer from sucking air in the event the water level got too low. It has a floating stopper inside. If your set up has only one port at the bottom of the skimmer then you most likely have a brass or PVC valve situated just before the pump inlet. Sometimes there are multiple valves and are usually not marked as to what they control. You just have to work with a partner to find out which one does what and where.k

What kind of skimmer should be used with an 18 ft X 48 inch round above-ground swimming pool if the pump being used is a Meteor 21 sand filter system?

Firstly, the pump is not a sand filter system. The pump is the one with the motor attached and it pumps water not sand. The large round tank is the "sand" filter. You would have to find a skimmer made for vinyl pools with gaskets. It attaches to the wall of the pool and is seen "hanging" from the outside of the pool. The type of pool and equipment have no factor in choosing a skimmer. another good way to go is the Dragonfly Super skimmer this is a floating pool skimmer and only requires a hose to connect it to suction
