Currently, HMS Ocean is the largest ship in the fleet, the amphibious helicopter carrier being based on the Invincible Class design. The new aircraft carriers, HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales will easily exceed this when they enter service in 2014.

The RN currently operates only 2 classes of frigate (anti-submarine and general purpose ships)

There are 4 Type 22 Batch 3 (Cumberland, Cornwall, Chatham, Campbeltown) which displaces 5300 tonnes and carries about 250 people

The smaller, but newer Type 23 displaces 4900 tonnes and has a crew of 180. There are about 12 of these in service, although the older ships have started to pay off and be sold.

In addition, the RN still operates 5 Type 42 Destroyers (air defence ships). The other 9 have been disposed of.

These are being replaced by 6 new Type 45 which at 7500 tonnes are significantly larger than the ships they replace, although there will be fewer of them. The first of these, 2 are in service and the remainder in various stages of build/commissioning

Is the Royal Navy capable of fighting a war?

Fully capable. The Royal Navy has been fighting wars for centuries, and winning many of them. The Royal Navy up until world war two was the largest navy in the world and is currently the third largest behind Russia and America. Given the size difference between the three one could argue that for it's size the Royal Navy is the best around and is just as if not more technologically advanced to Russia and the USA!
