Malayalam is the toughest language.

y coz it has got a verity of letters. you can find a corresponding letter for almost all sorts of sounds. For example in Tamil the inscription for RAGU, RAKHU, RAGHU all are the same. But in Malayalam all these will be written in a different way and the way he reads is the pronunciation. Moreover since it is not an old language many Hindi, Arab words are also included and that's the reason y Keralites(especially Malabar) can easily digest Hindi n Arabic. Literary works are indigenous and great and affection to communism makes it more complex than any other language. You can't find a similar word or usage in any other Indian language. Though Tamil and Malayalam are similar Tamils can't speak Malayalam as fluent as Keralies speak Tamil. By mastering Malayalam you can pull up with Tamil and Hindi. Though Malayalam evolved from Tamil, the latter literary works in Malayalam were based to Sanskrit. Malayalam took the religious works directly from Sanskrit rather than Tamil and that's why "Silapadikaram, Kannaki, Thirukkural" didn't show any influences in Malayalam literature.

Also Malayalam makes difficult by two more reasons. 1, phonetically - because there are some words Indian cannot pronounce. letter zha, (the letter see how they pronounce British people or American R in the word "where" this is zha) ta, this is exact pronunciation of "T" where British says "witty" not Indian "ROTI's" pronunciation of "T" there are more same as this 2, Gramatically - It's very dangerous to understand the grammar need to learn by long term...

i guess southern and southwestern languages like malayalam, tamil, telugu, marathi are most difficult to learn. Though marathi uses the same script as hindi but it's original script is modi. Marathi mostly resembles sanskrit and dravidian languages. Most of the vocabulary in marathi is same as that of sanskrit. Also in marathi there are alphabets which sounds in two different way like च, ज, झ. And marathi has a additional alphabet which is absent in hindi i.e.ळ pronounced as Ḷa. So i think even marathi is in same family of hindi, Bengali, gujarati it is totally different and this makes it difficult to understand for northern indian population. But if you are familiar with devanagari script you can at least easily read it. If we hear bengali, gujarati and other north indian languages they sounds familiar to us but marathi is tottaly different as most of its vocabulary is from sanskrit and dravidian languages. Thank you :)
