the policy of paying soldiers
And Gaius Marius ' s military reform
After Ceasars conquest of Gaul the Senate took away his rights to command the Legions he had and he was orderd to go to Rome alone and face trial and certain death.
Even thou the common people in Italy had benefited from the conquest of Gaul the Nobles had seen their wealth diminish by 1/3 due to the wast amount of gold and silver coming to Italy from Gaul.
Ceasar knew he had the support of the common people and he had loyal officers and veteran soldiers at his back and so the choice was simple he invaded Italy before his co consul Pompei the great had mustered all Legions at his command thus forcing the senate to do a strategic retreat to Greece.
Now Pompeis legions were divided by the sea and they ere taken piecemeal one at a time but most soldiers deserted and joined Ceasar due to the prospect of loot and also most soldiers were from the common people that had benefited from Julius Caesar.
The fact that the senate was trying to put Caesar on trial for irregularities during his rule as consul, the ordering of Caesar to disband his army (and not getting credit for the victories in Gaul) and the empowering of Pompey with an opposing army, were some of the factors that led to Julius Caesar revolting. By winning the civil war, he was able to take full power.
