This is a moving target because each year in the muscle car era each manufacturer would try to out do the others - competition regardless of economy. Chevrolet had a major foot in the door with the 283, 302, 305, 327 and 350 series - the easiest to find and cheapest "bang for the buck" when it came to adding ponies under the hood. But each enthusiast had their own favorites. many models are being left out - Chargers, Challengers, Road Runners, GTO's, Super Bee, Darts, Dusters, Cuda's, Mustang, Montego's, Maverick (Grabber), Torino's, Chevelle, Camaro, Monza, Firebird, 442, GS, GTX, the list could go on and on, but each had their own optional packages that would melt tires down to cord. To pick anyone of them out as standing clear above the rest would be impossible. Some had big blocks, some small blocks, 426 hemi had a "cult" following, 440 and 454 were torque monsters, 340's surprised many, but on the street, small blocks could rule if you couldn't get your big block to plant the torque - you were up in smoke while the small block walked out and then you'd play heck trying to catch'em. It took lots-o-buck to get a big block to spin up to 7k+ rpm and a few Chevy 302's would do it from the factory. But a favorite would be the 68 Challenger 426 hemi with pistol grip slap shift.

What muscle car was considered to be an icon of the muscle car era?

There were many icons of the muscle car era. One Icon was, what is considered by many as the very first muscle car, the Pontiac GTO. The very first one came out in 1964. Then there is the Shelby Cobra which was a true sports car and not really a Muscle car. Of course the Ford Mustang, Chevy Camaro, Plymouth Barracuda, Oldsmobile 442, Buick Gran Sport, & American Motors Javelin. There were others but these are the main icons.

When was the first muscle car built?

The 1964 GTO was the car that started the Muscle car era (intermediate/mid size car with an engine originally limited to full size car), mainly because of the quantity sold. There were faster cars sold before that, chevy 409, pontiac super duties, plymouth 413/426 wedge car, 1949 fireball considered by some to be the first(had 65% more power than a comparable ford)

What was the first muscle car ever made?

That depends on your definition of muscle car. Many consider the 1949 Oldsmobile Rocket 88 to be the first muscle car, but others consider it to be a "precursor." Debuting in 1964, the Pontiac GTO is another car widely referred to as the original muscle car. The GTO's success helped jumpstart the high-performance market and ushered in the era of the vehicle as status symbol.
