Nixon. VP to Eisenhower in the 50's. Lost in '60 to Kennedy. Beat out Humphrey and Wallace in '68.
In the 1968 general presidential election, George Wallace led a relatively strong third party, the American Independent Party. Richard Nixon, the Republican candidate developed a "Southern Strategy", hoping to appeal to conservative whites in the south that usually voted Democrat, but were disillusioned with Democratic candidate Hubert Humphrey's support of the civil rights movement. However, Wallace, with his stronger anti-civil rights movement sentiments, won over many of the votes Nixon would have otherwise won. Thus, Wallace was able to split much of the Republican vote. However, this vote-splitting still did not stop Nixon from winning the election.
