Why not use winamp for music handling with the iPod. First gen nano's do not have the encrypted file systems so you should be able to use it. I personally think that Windows Media Player can't hold a candle to Winamp. Winamp can do everything that WMP can do, and it can do it better. Check it out @ winamp.com .
note: there is a little bit of a noobie learning curve, but not much of one.

Find your "shared" folder and drag and drop the song you choose into Windows Media Player.
You shall convert them.
