Manchuria is a historical name given to a vast geographic region in northeast Asia. Depending on the definition of its extent, Manchuria either falls entirely within China, or is divided between China and Russia. The region is commonly referred to as Northeast China, and historically referred as Guandong, which literally means 'the east of Shanhai Pass.'
In 1931, Japan seized the region of Manchuria in northeastern China. This act marked the beginning of the Second Sino-Japanese War and the expansion of Japanese aggression in East Asia.
In 1931, Japan's militant expansion into Manchuria was motivated by several factors. The first was a simple matter of opportunistic aggression: they took advantage of their weak neighbor, China, to gain control of a rich region. The second was more complex, in that Japan had long intended to take Manchuria as just a first step in conquering China as a whole.
Manchuria was an important region for strategical reasons and essential to any long term military plans that the Japanese High Command had to pursue it's goals during war . Manchuria's rich mineral and coal reserves along with its soil was perfect for soy and barley production. Prior to World War II , Manchuria was an essential source of raw materials in iron and other metals . Without occupying Manchuria and exploiting these resources , the Japanese probably could not have carried out their plan for conquest over SouthEast Asia or taken the risk/gamble to attack the US at Pearl Harbor .
Manchuria was their first conquest. So that they could control an area for political reasons as well military necessity. Politically, it was the old "Look, we are not your enemy, your provincial leaders invited us here. But they wanted to ultimately control all the major port cities south of Manchuria.
