∙ 11y agoIn an informal or family style setting the fork goes to the left of the plate, the knife goes to the right of the plate (cutting edge facing the plate) and the spoon goes to the right of the knife.
In a formal setting the dinner fork goes to the left of the plate, the salad fork goes to the left of that and if there is to be a fish course, the fish knife goes to the left of the salad fork. The dinner knife goes to the right of the plate (cutting edge toward the plate), if there is to be a fish course, the fish knife goes to the right of the dinner knife, the butter knife is placed on the bread plate (to the left of the place setting, the soup spoon goes to the right of the fish knife. The dessert fork goes horizontally above the dinner plate with the tines pointing right and the dessert spoon goes above that with the bowl pointing left. Teaspoons are usually brought with the cup and saucer.
