The Hawashim clan controlled Mecca (and the Masjid Al-Haram) from the 1200s all the way up to the Saudi conquest of Hejaz in the 1920s. Therefore, they would have been in control in 1880.
It is important to note that the Hawashim are in no way related to Banu Hashim.
