It is said that the stronger the acidity of a solution is, the better it will clean the penny. There are many substances you can use, some of which are lemon juice, vinegar, Pepsi, Coke, etc..

I would say 7up or Sprite since they are more acidic

Coca-Cola takes rust of a bumper. Coke is more acidic than 7-up or Sprite.

A coke will clean a real penny. We had this one in HS chemistry all those decades ago. It will dissolve the penny. I don't know about the current cokes or the current penny. I was in HS from 1956 to 1959.

Dipping a penny in coke, vinegar, or any other acid will dissolve the outer oxidation and reveal shiny copper underneath. However, if there's any chance whatsoever that the coin might be worth more than 1 cent to a collector, DO NOT TRY TO CLEAN IT!!! Anything that damages the metal will also reduce or even destroy the coin's value to a collector.
