Fourteen vice presidents later became president:

John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Martin Van Buren, John Tyler, Millard Fillmore, Andrew Johnson, Chester A. Arthur, Theodore Roosevelt, Calvin Coolidge, Harry S Truman, Richard M. Nixon, Lyndon B. Johnson, Gerald R. Ford and George H.W. Bush.

Five of them, Adams, Jefferson, Van Buren , Nixon and Bush completed their terms as vice-president and then ran for president. The others moved up to the Presidency because the President died or resigned. Roosevelt, Coolidge, Truman Lyndon Johnson were elected to a second term after they became president.

John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Martin Van Buren, Richard Nixon and George H. W. Bush were all elected vice-president before they were elected President. Theodore Roosevelt, Calvin Coolidge, Harry Truman and Lyndon Johnson first became President due to the death of the President, but were then elected to a term of their own.

John Adams - elected VP 1789, elected President 1796

Thomas Jefferson - elected VP 1796, elected President 1800

Martin Van Buren - elected VP 1832, elected President 1836

Richard Nixon - Elected VP 1952 and 1956, elected President 1968.

George H. W, Bush- elected VP in 1980 ans 1984, elected President in 1988/

In addition, T Roosevelt, Coolidge, Truman and LB Johnson all succeeded to the Presidency on the death of an incumbent, and went on to be elected to a subsequent elected term.

Several other Vice Presidents have become President, but they reached the office without being elected due to death or resignation of the President.

Fifteen US vice presidents later became president. They are: John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Martin Van Buren, John Tyler, Millard Fillmore, Andrew Johnson, Chester Alan Arthur, Theodore Roosevelt, Calvin Coolidge, Harry S Truman, Lyndon Baines Johnson, Richard Milhous Nixon, Gerald Rudolph Ford Jr, and George Herbert Walker Bush all served as both President and Vice President of the United States.

Tyler, Fillmore, Andrew Johnson, Arthur, and Ford were never elected president, but served only because the president died. Theodore Roosevelt, Coolidge, Truman and Lyndon Johnson first became President because of the death of the President, but later were elected to another term.

Gerald Ford was the only one who was not elected to be vice president in the usual way, but appointed by the president and confirmed by Congress when the elected VP resigned in mid-term.
