pearl harbor Pearl Harbor was not an amphibious attack. Possibly the invasion of French North Africa (Operation Torch) in 1942 was the largest before Normandy, or the invasion of Sicily (Operation Husky) in 1943.

∙ 14y agoOne must first need to know what nation one isreferring to. If you mean the United States or Japan or even Germany and whether or not one is referring to landings from oceans, lakes or rivers, these are the things one needs to narrow the question. Japan could be considered the first with their invasion of China in the 30's. If you are referring to the United States it would be the landings in Guadalcanal in the middle of 1942. Japan was the initiator of amphibious landings with the opening assaults of December of 1941 with their landings in Indochina and the Philippines. Germany used amphibious assaults in 1941 in their invasion of the Soviet Union. The United States first used amphibious assaults on the north west African coast on November 8, 1942.

∙ 14y agoEither Iwo Jima or Okinawa, most likely Iwo. There were six divisions of Marines by that point in the war. Three of them went ashore on Iwo and a month and a half later the other three went in to Okinawa. One regiment of Marines was a "floating reserve', remaining aboard ship for a while at Okinawa, though.
Iwo Jima was an all-marine operation. Okinawa involved the three Marine divisions there plus even more Army divisions. Okinawa was the only place outside the Philippines where an entire US field army was deployed - the US 10th Army, which included the Marines in an Amphibious Corps.
