The Rolling Stones hired the Hell's Angels for security at California's Altamont Speedway in 1969 having used them on several other occasions without any problems. Like many of the audience most of the Hell's Angels drank too much and dropped acid among other types of drugs, using pool cues as weapons as well as throwing full cans of beer at anyone they thought was going to cause trouble. The Hell's Angels encircled the rather low stage to protect the performers, but only succeeded in making it a 'party time' event for themselves. On one occasion during the Jefferson Airplane's set Marty Balin was knocked out by a Hell's Angel near the stage. 18 year old Meredith Hunter, a black man, was near the stage with a knife and gun and the Hell's Angels beat him to death with their pool cues. Mick Jaggar tried to calm everyone down (called an ambulance) and had no choice, but to continue on with the concert or more violence would break out.
