Electric drills are a refinement of earlier drills turned by hand power, water power or steam. Once the electric motor was developed this technology was applier to drills. The invention of the electric drill in general is attributed to Arthur James Arnot and William Blanch Brain in 1889, at Melbourne, Australia. The portable electric hand drill is general credited to Wilhelm Fein in 1895, at Stuttgart, Germany.

Shortly thereafter, around 1889, a man by the name of Arthur James Arnot invented and patented the first electric drill in Melbourne, Australia. This electric drill was not portable in any way. However, it did function as a working power tool, as it was one of the world's first.

The drill as we know it, was invented about 1895. Black and Decker invented the pistol-grip type of electric drill in 1917.
