The Bryants wrote it in 1960 for the Everly Brothers, and Orbison covered it in the next year. That was the first cover that was a chart-topper. Then Nazareth covered it, changing the 'stove' line so that it doesn't make sense. That's the most popular cover and the most well known. Many other people have covered it. Several other cover versions of it were released in subsequent decades, the best known ones being done by Nazareth and Cher, although other bands also have done versions of it, including The Who, Jim Capaldi and Jennifer Warnes.
