Who are the Disney princesses?

Answer:
The official list from the Walt Disney Company consists of ten princesses:
  • Snow White, from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)
  • Cinderella, from Cinderella (1950)
  • Aurora, from Sleeping Beauty (1959)
  • Ariel, from The Little Mermaid (1989)
  • Belle, from Beauty and the Beast (1991)
  • Jasmine, from Aladdin (1992)
  • Pocahontas, from Pocahontas (1995)
  • Mulan, from Mulan (1998)
  • Tiana, from The Princess and The Frog (2009)
  • Rapunzel, from Tangled (2010)

Five are royal by birth (Snow White, Aurora, Ariel, Jasmine, and Rapunzel). Three are royal by marriage (Cinderella, Belle, and Tiana). Inclusion of Pocahontas and Mulan on the Princesses list is contested by some fans. Although Pocahontas is the daughter of a Native American chief, there is some disagreement in the ways that the structure of Native American tribes differs from traditional European royalty. Mulan is neither royal nor marries royalty (her husband, Li Shang, is a captain and then general in the Chinese Army).

Alice (from Alice in Wonderland), Giselle (from Enchanted), Maid Marion (from Robin Hood), Nala (from The Lion King), and Megara (from Hercules) have also been included in Disney Princess merchandise but are not considered to be Disney Princesses. Minnie Mouse has also appeared in Disney Princess merchandise.

In addition, there are princesses created by Disney that have never been included in the Disney Princess line, such as Eilonwy (from The Black Cauldron) and Kida (from Atlantis).

In June 2012, the first Disney-Pixar princess will be Princess Merida from the film Brave. It has not been announced if Merida will join the official Disney Princess line.
