How many Disney Princess aren't actually princesses?

There are several girls that are considered Disney "Princesses" (or are part of the "Princess Club") but aren't technically princesses. They include:

• Mulan - Chinese royalty didn't function the same way European royalty did, and in any case, Mulan didn't marry royalty-- she married Shang, a military general!
• Pocahontas - While the chief of a Native American daughter's tribe was treated with great respect, she wasn't technically a princess: Native American standards differ from European standards.
• Tiana - The heroine of Disney's upcoming "The Princess and the Frog" is supposedly an ordinary girl living in 1920s New Orleans. She is most likely going to become a princess by marriage. The name of the male character in the movie is Prince Naveen.
• Belle and Cinderella are princesses by marriage; neither of them were royal birth, but became Princesses because of who they married.
• Giselle, of Disney's live-action/animated-mesh "Enchanted" never married the prince. Instead, Nancy (played by Idina Menzel) did marry Edward, so she became a princess instead. However, due to royalty concerns, the likeness of either girl is not used in Disney Princess merchandise.

There are also several actual Princesses in animated movies that are not made by Disney. These include:

• Anastasia - From the film of the same name, produced by Fox; she's widely considered as a Princess, though technically, she was a Grand Duchess.
• Princess Fiona - From the Shrek films, produced by Dreamworks
• Odette - From the Swan Princess movies, produced by Nest Family Entertainment.
• Thumbelina - From the film of the same name, by Sullivan Bluth Studios.
• Anna Leonowens - From the King and I, a Warner Brothers production.

Mulan is not a Princess, she an Entertainment Political Princess. The movie was so popular that Disney puts her in the franchise marketing with the other princesses. But she was not royality, and she doesnt marry a prince. In Mulan 2 her little friends the Princesses Mei, Ting-Ting and Su, they are unfranchised Princesses if Disney.

Alice: Alice in Wonderland

Alice herself is not technically a princess. Alice appears as one of the princesses of hearts in the Disney/Squaresoft game "Kingdom Hearts" as one of the 'princesses' who is targeted by Maleficent and Ansem. She is also included in the 2008 artwork for the princess collection, further confusing her status. Alice is the daughter of a noblewoman however, whose identity is not fully revealed during the course of the storyline. This means that her family line is never clearly defined and she may or may not be of royal lineage.

Giselle: Enchanted

The Princess featured in 'Enchanted' does not appear in the official 'Princess' lineup for two reasons. Though she is acknowledged by Disney as a princess, Giselle refuses the prince's affections and marries a normal American during the course of the storyline. Disney has also stated that she is not part of the line because they would have to pay the actress (Amy Adams) each time her image was used - resulting in a high cost for the character.

TinkerBell:

She is a Disney icon, she should be considered a princess because she is so famous. She is featured in many Disney princess pictures. I think that the movie that recently came out about her is a little disappointing, considering her importance to the Disney company.

Esmeralda:

She is a pretty gypsy that ends up marrying a knight. She is sometimes featured in Disney pictures with the other Princesses as well.

Megara:

She is featured in several Disney princess pictures and also included in a couple of the enchanted movies that they have. She would be a Goddess if anything, because she marries Hercules and his a God. She is not a Princess.

NON DISNEY PRINCESSES (that are confused with being them)

The first five are royal by birth while the remaining three are royal by marriage. But if you are asking which ones existed in the real world, the only ones who were based off of real people are also the only ones who are technically not princesses: Pocahontas and Mulan.
