Art Deco was influenced by the Cubist painters such as Picasso, Fernand Leger, Braque and others. Tamara de Lempicka was a famous female Art Deco painter whose works really evoke the period. Louis Icart also painted in a very Art Deco style. Many artists were more famous for their graphic art in posters, such as Cassandre, Paul Colin, Jean Carlu, Edward Mcknight Kauffer and Roger Broders.

Famous fashion print artists of the time include Georges Barbier, Paul Iribe, Georges Lepape and Erte.

Other famous art deco artists were known for their crafts rather than visual art - some of these include:

Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann - known for designing art deco furniture.

Rene Lalique - for glass

Jean Puiforcat - for silver

Clarice Cliff - for ceramics

The name Art Deco comes from the Exposition Internationale des Art Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris in 1925. The Cubist movement contributed to Art Deco with the unifying approach of art nouveau and Parisian fauvism. It exemplified the geometric designs of New York buildings like the Chrysler and Rockefeller Center. Reflecting modern technology it was characterized by smooth lines, geometric shapes, forms, and bright colors.
