In episodes 1-3, the good army was called the Galactic Republic. At the end of episode 3 the Republic becomes the Empire, the bad guys. In episodes 4-6, the good army is named the Rebel Alliance.

Debatable.... George Lucas originally portrayed the jedi as being the good guys but upon closer inspection of films has shown the jedi out to be almost tyrannical... showing jedi performing such traits as stripping people of their will and forcing them to do things they otherwise would not have done....Such is seen in the classical "Move along" aspect of star wars where a jedi used his "Jedi mind trick" to force a storm trooper to allow them to pass through inspection even though they were in fact "The droids they were looking for". Many instances have shown how the sith were merely doing there job...but for movies sake....Its a safe bet that George lucas wanted you to eat your popcorn and not question why there was nobody around to protect the younglings in ROTS from a war time crysis...
