If a vice president dies, the president can pick his successor (as in the case of Gerald Ford).

According to the 25th Amendment: Whenever there is a vacancy in the office of the Vice President, the President shall nominate a Vice President who shall take office upon confirmation by a majority vote of both Houses of Congress.

Anyone who occupies the vice presidential office, if he or she wishes to assume the presidency, must fulfill all of the qualifications as outlined in the Constitution: one must be at least 35 years old, a natural-born U.S. citizen, and be a resident of the United States for at least 14 years upon taking office.

The president remains the president when the vice president dies.

If the vice-president dies, a new vice-president is chosen according to a procedure found in the 25th amendment to the constitution.

If the president and vice-president were both killed at the same time,

the Speaker of the House of Representatives would become president.

The President will still continue regardless of whether the Vice President dies or not, unless the President himself dies.

The President will nominate a new Vice President if one dies, resigns, or otherwise leaves office. If confirmed by Congress, the new Vice President would assume all the roles of the office. (This occurred with Gerald Ford, who became Vice President after Spiro Agnew resigned in 1973, and then President when Richard Nixon resigned in 1974.)

If there is no Vice President, the President could be replaced, either temporarily or permanently, by the Speaker of the House, who is next in the line of succession.

What happens if the President dies or is disabled?

If the President dies (or is permanently incapacitated), the Vice President succeeds to the Presidency for the remainder of the President's term. If there is sufficient time involved, a new Vice President will be nominated to serve the Vice President's term. If the President is alive but temporarily incapacitated, there is a complicated procedure for allowing the Vice President to act as Acting President temporarily, as spelled out in the 25th Amendment to the US Constitution. The amendment considers the cases where the President voluntarily yields his powers or when he does not, as well as the process of returning the powers to the President if he recovers.
