The Victory was commissioned by the British Admiralty and built by Chatham Dockyard, starting in 1759. It was launched four years later in 1763. It was left idle for another thirteen years until the Admiralty commissioned it for use. The ship was finally completed in 1778.

Nelson's flag ship the H.M.S (His Majesty's Service) vessel 'Victory', was commisioned by the Admiralty in 1758 and the keel was laid by the Royal Navy shipbuilders of Chatham Dockyard on the river Medway in Kent England on the 23 July 1759.

Mr George Williams carved the figurehead between 1801 and 1803 carved at a cost of £50.

Ropes and rigging would have been made in the rope factory which still exists and makes Hemp rope at Chatham historic dockyard to this day.

The Cannons on the original fit were cast by:

W.Co. - Walker & Company, of Rotheram, Yorkshire.

H.Co. - James Henckle & Company, Wandsworth, London

ACB. - Alexander Brodie, on the River Severn

Today she sports "Spoils of war" cannons in the form of 12 guns which originally belonged to Napoleans fleet.

There are also some other cannons which were salvaged from English vessels and reused.
