Gaylord Nelson, former US Senator, was the founder of Earth Day. He believed strongly that education is the key to changing people's attitudes about the environment and he devoted much of his energy to that challenge. He died at age 89 in July 2005.
Quote from Bill Clinton in 1995 regarding: THE PRESIDENTIAL MEDAL OF FREEDOM
"The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the highest honor given to civilians in the United States. Twenty-five years ago this year, Americans came together for the very first Earth Day. They came together because of one American - Gaylord Nelson. As the father of Earth Day, he inspired us to remember that the stewardship of our Natural Resources is the stewardship of the American Dream. He is the worthy heir of the tradition of Theodore Roosevelt, and I hope that Gaylord Nelson's shining example will illuminate all the debates in this city for years to come."
The person generally credited (or blamed) as the originator of Earth Day was Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson. A Democrat with a history of environmental boosterism, Nelson visited the California coast near Santa Barbrara in 1969 and saw the ugly results of an oil spill from an offshore drilling platform. This event is said to have inspired him, and in large part because of his efforts, the first Earth Day took place on April 22, 1970.

The generally accepted story at least for Christians is God created earth. He didn't write down the day-- his pencil broke. Seriously, Earth was not "discovered" nor "invented". So it was created. When is up to geologists...why is up to theologians and philosophers... Where is easy-- here!

This is a good philosophical question. Of course no one on earth has the answer.
All of them are. The constellations were all invented by human beings, on Earth. None were invented that can't be seen from Earth.
