Camera obscura, it was created in early china, the theory was that if you seal a box and it's pitch black in side and you poke a hole the image would be upside down, this came to be true. Then deguerre found out that silver nitrate turns black when you put it in the light, aka how we get film, hope I helped!
Cameras were originally hand-made by individual craftsman, often to order, or by the person who intended to use them. One of the earliest US brand-name sellers of cameras was E. Anthony, later E. and H.T. Anthony, the first large scale seller of photographic supplies in this country, but even Anthony had many of its cameras made to order or imported, so the switch from craftsman-built to brand name manufacturing was a gradual evolution. Anthony was also to become the longest-lived seller of photographic goods. Anthony eventually merged with Scovill, to become Anthony-Scovill, soon shortened to Ansco, then Agfa-Ansco, which ultimately became Agfa-Gevaert which, through that lineage, is the oldest continuously operating photographic firm in the world.
The first photographic camera, which I assume is what you mean, was made by Joseph Nicéphore Niépce (1765-1833). It was a simple wooden box camera with a condensing lens that he used in April 1816 to produce the first photograph made with a camera. Niepce also gets credit for the first use of a bellows and first use of an iris diaphragm in a camera. His first photographs were paper negatives that he was unable to fix, so they were not permanent images. He took the first permanent photograph made with a camera in 1826. This image currently resides in the Gernsheim collection at the University of Texas in Austin. The word "camera" comes from "camera obscura" or dark chamber. The optical effect of the pinhole was observed and understood by Aristotle in about the fourth century BC, but it's application as a viewing instrument was first described in detail in the 11th century by the Arab scholar Hassan ibn Hassan (Hassan Ibn Al Haitham), otherwise known as Alhazen. His description placed a small hole in the window or ceiling of a darkened room to project an image onto the opposite wall. It was described then as a method for viewing solar eclipses safely. The portable camera obscura was first described in the early 17th century as a sketching aid. Small, camera-sized boxes were being made by 1685, but it wasn't until Niepce began his experiments that they were used for Photography.
