Child care in Texas is only regulated if it is not in the child's own home. If you want to care for a child in your own home or anywhere other than where the infant lives, you must contact your local childcare licensing department (under the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services) and request a permit.

Note, that this is for regular care. If you just are occasionally helping out when the parents run an errand, or have a date night, you can do that without regulation. If you are wanting to babysit in your home with regularity (more than a couple hours weekly), you need to contact Childcare Licensing about getting a permit. If it is only one child, you may be listed, which just means that you have to have a background check. If it is more than three children, you will need additional regulation.
