[Improve]
Oliver Cromwell who was an MP in the House of Commons and then became the leader of the Parliamentary forces in the English Civil War. When Charles I was defeated and executed Oliver Cromwell became Lord Protector of the Republic of England (virtual dictator) and because he was a Puritan he did not like celebrations. So he banned christmas as a celebration.
