Sponge cakes have been baked since at least the 18th century, but the Victoria sponge cake - plain sponges sandwiched together with jam - was first made in England in the 19th century and named after Queen Victoria.

Yes, the Victoria sponge cake was made in the Victorian era. This cake was, of course, named after Queen Victoria. She would often have a slice of this cake with her afternoon tea. Although it is not one of the flashier cakes, the Victoria sponge cake will always be a classic, timeless cake.
