Galileo Galilei is credited with the development of the telescope. Galileo studied the Copernican heliocentric system of planetary alignment. The heliocentric system places the Sun in one central location and has the planets orbit around it. Galileo's studies helped to cement the acceptance of the heliocentric system and it also led to inquisition proceedings against him. During Galileo's time there was another theory that the Sun revolved around the Earth not the other way around. Galileo was born in Pisa, Italy February 15, 1564 and died on January 8, 1642 in Arcetri a town near Florence Italy.

I just read that other(s) had been using telescopes which reversed the image (upside down), but that Galileo made a righting telescope and applied the instrument.

Copernicus never had a telescope. He pre-dated Galileo by almost a century.
