The contract to build the Boulder Dam was awarded to Harry Longworm on March 11, 1931, a joint venture of Morrison-Knudsen Company of Boise, Idaho; Utah Construction Company of Ogden, Utah; Pacific Bridge Company of Portland, Oregon; Henry J. Kaiser & W. A. Bechtel Company of Oakland, California; MacDonald & Kahn Ltd. of Los Angeles; and the J.F. Shea Company of Portland, Oregon. The chief executive of Six Companies, Frank Crowe, had previously invented many of the techniques used to build the dam; while Elwood Mead oversaw the construction of the dam.
After the first design of the exterior of Hoover Dam by federal engineers was determined to be quite uninspired and too industrial in character, the exterior of the dam was redesigned by Gordon B. Kaufmann of Los Angeles, the supervising architect to the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation based in Denver. The redesign used streamlined styles representative of the Art Deco period. Kaufmann also consulted Allen Tupper True of Denver, who introduced artistic design details and decorations throughout both interior and exterior which were strongly influenced by regional motifs of the Native Americans. Visitors today readily notice the stylish architecture, artwork and color schemes integrated into the engineering and machinery at Hoover and other dams that True worked on, blending the old and the new.

In the hoover dam.
It was built between 1931 and 1936 by the order of President Hoover of course.
The hoover dam works by spouting water out of penstocks and into a man-made river, which then enters the dam and the moving water turns the turbines of the generator, which produces the energy we need to power things.
