Who designed the Statue of Liberty? |
[Improve]
The sculptor was Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904) and the internal structure was designed by Eiffel Tower architect Gustave Eiffel's assistant Maurice Koechlin. The statue was envisioned by Bartholdi in 1867 and commissioned around 1870 for its planned presentation in 1876, the US Centennial. Due to delays, only the arm and torch were completed by that date. The final design was patented in 1879 and the statue finished in 1884. It was disassembled and rebuilt on Bedloe's Island, NY (later Liberty Island) and dedicated on October 28, 1886.
