Some of Elizabeth's jewels went to family and friends who were unpublicized with the exception of Debbie Reynolds who received an undescribed ruby piece. The rest were sold at auction. Christie's reported that the auction of the major jewels (those not included with her Haute Couture) realized a staggering total of $137,235,575.00 US Dollars making it the most valuable private collection of jewelry ever put up for auction.
The top lot of the sale was the legendary 16th century La Peregrina Pearl which realized a double record setting $11,842,500.00 US Dollars. The world records set were for the highest price for an historic pearl and for a pearl jewel. Fascinating since Richard Burton only paid $37,000 US Dollars for it in 1967.
The total value of Dame Elizabeth's jewels could exceed $150,000,000.00 US Dollars when the ones in the online auction and those included in the Haute Couture auctions are included.
A collection of Taylor's jewelry with an estimated value of 30 million dollars is going up for auction today, September 9 2011. The items in today's auction include La Peregrina, one of the largest and most perfectly symmetrical pear shaped pearls in the world that was once part of the Spanish Crown Jewels, and the Elizabeth Taylor Diamond, a gift from Richard Burton weighing in at 33.19 carats.
Miss Taylor gave most of her estate to the HIV/AIDS foundation. There are a lot of clinics and drugs that are free for those that suffer in south FL. Thank you for caring about those that America shuns.
The main portion of Dame Elizabeth's estate (valued in 1996 during her divorce from Larry Fortensky at $608,000,000+) went to The Elizabeth Taylor Trust, presumably with her 4 children as principle trustees along with her 10 grandchildren, and 3 (and probably provisions for future) great grandchildren. A percentage was allotted to The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation. There were reports also of another trust, The Sothern Trust, named for her mother's maiden name being a beneficiary. Larry Fortensky received $800,000. Debbie Reynolds received a ruby and diamond bracelet, and Kathy Ireland received Elizabeth's 3rd Oscar, The 1993 Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. I am sure there are many others who received money or an important piece of memorabilia from Dame Elizabeth's estate.
