Thirty-third President of the United States, Harry S. Truman chose Alben W. Barkley as his running mate. Barkley served as the Vice-President of the United States from 1949 to 1953.
Alben W Berkley of Kentucky.
In 1948, Democrat President Harry Truman beat Republican New York Governor Thomas Dewey. Thomas Dewey was a great crime fighter, however, he though he was going to beat Harry Truman easy and eased up in the last few months of the campaign. Harry kept on campaigning up to election day, and won a surprise victory. That was in 1948 and "Dewey Beats Truman" was a long time ago. Very few elections since 1948 have been that surprising. Most victories are accurately predicted well in advance, and losing candidates quote "Dewey Beats Truman" as a last gasp of hope that is fading fast. The NY State Thruway is named for Thomas Dewey. Thomas Dewey was one of the best crime fighters in the history of the USA.

Although some are under the mistaken impression that Truman was not eligible to run for re-election because of the 22nd Amendment, that is not correct. The amendment was passed during Truman's presidency as a response to FDR's four consecutive elections as president, but the language of the amendment itself specifically excluded the occupant of the White House at the time of its passge - Truman - and thus he was eligible to run in 1952. Privately, several years earlier he had written - but not released - a letter announcing that he would not be a candidate in 1952. He was 68 years old, had served nearly eight years as president, and his wife certainly favoried a return to Independence, Missouri. Truman also undoubtedly recognized that it would be difficult if not impossible to win re-election. He may have considered his chances strong against Ohio Senator Robert Taft, but would have been a severe underdog against Dwight Eisenhower. Because of this, in the spring of 1952, Truman announced that he would not be a candidate for re-election. He waited until that point to preserve whatever political capital he had remaining, as lame duck presidents see their power ebb dramatically once it is clear that they will not be candidates for re-election.
To say that Eisenhower beat Truman in 1952 is ridiculous. Truman did not run in '52. Eisenhower beat Adli Stevenson in 1952.
