The proton was discovered in 1918 by Ernest Rutherford. He noticed that when alpha particles were shot into nitrogen gas, his scintillation detectors showed the signatures of hydrogen nuclei. Rutherford determined that the only place this hydrogen could have come from was the nitrogen, and therefore nitrogen must contain hydrogen nuclei. He thus suggested that the hydrogen nucleus, which was known to have an atomic number of 1, was an elementary particle. This he named proton, from protos, the Greek for "first".

Discovery of the ProtonIn the early 1920's after the discovery of the electron, Rutherford and other physicists made a number experiments, transmuting one atom into another. In every case, hydrogen nuclei were emitted in the process. It was apparent that the hydrogen nucleus played a fundamental role in atomic structure, and by the late 1920's physicists were regularly referring to hydrogen nuclei as 'protons'. The term proton itself seems to have been coined by Rutherford, and first appears in print in 1920.See the Related Questions links to the left for more information.
The discovery of Proton is mainly attributed to Ernest Rutherford in the year 1919. The discovery was a gradual process based on the work of at least three physicists: Thomson, Rutherford and Chadwick. However, Rutherford is considered the real man who discovered proton since he was the person who first classified the proton. But a series of discoveries between Thomson's discovery of the electron in 1897, Rutherford's discovery of the nucleus in 1911, and Chadwick's discovery of the neutron in 1932 that led to the official discovery of the proton when physicists discovered that the nucleus contained positively charged elements.
Protons are also known as the hydrogen ion, H+. They are positively charged. One or more protons are present in the nucleus of each atom, along with neutrons.
In 1886, Eugen Goldstein discovered canal rays and showed that they were positively charged particles (hydrogen ions) produced from gases.
In 1919, Ernest Rutherford proved that hydrogen-containing nuclei can be found in other nuclei, a result usually described as the discovery of the proton.
He noticed that when alpha particles were shot into nitrogen gas, his scintillation detectors showed the signatures of hydrogen nuclei. Rutherford determined that this hydrogen could only have come from the nitrogen, and therefore nitrogen must contain hydrogen nuclei. The hydrogen nucleus is therefore present in other nuclei as an elementary particle, which Rutherford named the proton.

After the discovery of the electron, it was realized that there must be positive charge centers within the atom to balance the negative electrons and create electrically neutral atoms. Rutherford's discovery of the nucleus demonstrated that these positive charges were concentrated in a very small fraction of the atoms' volume. In 1919 Rutherford discovered that he could change one element into another by striking it with energetic alpha particles (which we now know are just helium nuclei). In the early 1920's Rutherford and other physicists made a number experiments, transmuting one atom into another. In every case, hydrogen nuclei were emitted in the process. It was apparent that the hydrogen nucleus played a fundamental role in atomic structure, and by comparing nuclear masses to charges, it was realized that the positive charge of any nucleus could be accounted for by an integer number of hydrogen nuclei. By the late 1920's physicists were regularly referring to hydrogen nuclei as 'protons'. The term proton itself seems to have been coined by Rutherford, and first appears in print in 1920
The scientist that discovered protons is not certain, but Ernest Rutherford discovered the nucleus of an atom in 1911 after J.J. Thompson discovered the electron in 1897. Rutherford is generally given the credit for discovering the proton.

Ernest Rutherford is generally credited with the discovery of the proton
Discovery of the proton happened so slowly and by so many that it is impossible to give just one scientist credit for it. Physicists Rutherford, who is credited with discovering the nucleus, is also credited with coining the name proton.
He added the proton. He thought that the only particle in the nucleus was the proton. The neutron was discovered much later by Chadwick.
