Also Ptolemy (2nd century A.D.) was a Greek astronomer and mathematician who lived and worked in Egypt. He wrote the book Geographie which charts all the places of the world as known to them at that time. His works , which employed a system of latitudes and longitudes , influenced map-makers for hundreds of years . He was a cartographer and he evolved the science of map-making.

In 225 B.C.E. the astronomer Eratosthenes widespread the use of the grid system.
