The popular story is that Isaac newton, after watching the fall of an apple, postulated that the same force that caused the apple to fall perpendicular to the earth's surface could, if it were to exert an influence far enough out from the planet, hold the moon in its orbit. From this specific case, he then expanded his theory to encompass the reason planets were kept in their orbits around the sun.

Isaac Newton with his theory of gravity is probably the answer. But even he couldn't really explain the "nature" of gravity.
Isaac Newton discovered the nature of gravity when he described how to calculate the force from the two masses and their distance. Before that the concepts of force and mass had to be defined, and Galilelo played an important part in that.

The person who "discovered" gravity was Sir Isac Newton, and he pulled it all together regarding the gravity of the sun and the planetary orbits.

The suns huge gravitational force keeps the planets in an orbit around it. Mass is related to gravity, the more mass the bigger the gravity. The suns mass is huge compared with the planets, so the sun has a large and influential gravitational field.

Nicolaus Copernicus, from Poland came up with the theory. It was then the work of mainly Kepler Galileo and Newton that proved the theory was probably correct. So, no single person "discovered" this.
