The approximate value of what we call pi was known in ancient times as being a little more than 3, and various values were used. The Greek mathematician Archimedes (287-212 bc) calculated that pi was between 3 10/70 and 3 10/71. That was very close to the present-day accepted value of 3.14159265 (to the first 8 decimal places).
