The last step is to be voted into office by the people of the US. Hopefully they do an appropriate amount of vetting before they decide how to vote. The first step is to win the nomination and although primary elections may settle the nomination, it takes money to win primaries and the people who put up the money take a hard look at the candidates they choose to support.
