No one person founded England. England came about as the amalgamation of numerous Anglo-Saxon and Danish kingdoms due to war, conquest and marriage. Alfred the Great is often considered the first King of England but in reality he was just the latest of a long line of Kings who gained some temporary supremacy over his neighbors. Offa of Mercia had first called himself "King of the English" in the late 8th Century.
Probably Alfred's grandson has the best claim to being the First true King of England. From his reign onwards the subsidiary kingdom nver really came back to prominence and the ever changing succession was over the Kingdom of the English.
